Concrete: Complete Short Stories 1986-1989 - Paul Chadwick

These short stories run before and parallel to the main run of 'Concrete' as collected in 'Complete Concrete'. Chadwick's growth in storytelling techniques - visual and verbal - is there and each issue continues to subvert and defy what's expected from a comic book.

Chadwick explores not only how Concrete is affected by his transformation and day to day life, but how he is perceived by those around him. He is viewed as a curiosity, a threat, an opportunity, or a totem depending on the observer. In one story an artist has made him an obsession and the main focus of her work, another has Concrete's attempts at a project foiled by a pair of children before he decides to have a little fun with them. In the middle of Concrete's deepest philosophical orations or fantasies he'll be rudely shaken into the mundane world. He's so ordinary despite everything. It's marvelous to see it done, and yet I can't put my finger on how its done.
