The Ruins

The Ruins - Scott B. Smith

Sometimes you just need a fat paperback that reads at a breakneck pace. I liked how Smith approached the book, the young, vacationing college students, the temporary friendships they formed and the spur-of-the-moment decision to take a trip to a remote locale -- there's no new revelations to be had there so he doesn't even try. It's not until it's too late for them do you see into their heads at all. I especially liked the drama of the constant repetition of "the Greeks are coming" as they hope(less/full)y scan the horizon.

A great, unexpected villain, too. An absolute dick, but great.
