Story of My Life by Jay McInerney
'Story of My Life' is a funny, fast-paced read with a surface of fashionable lifestyles and references to the high-life of the 1980s. Beneath it all is the story of a confused girl trying to make sense of her life and wh her and her friends do what they do.
Alison Poole is a little selfish, admittedly under-educated, and full of flaws, but she is honest with herself (and therefore us readers) and only occasionally flinches. I enjoyed reading the book and sympathized with Alison, but I could also understand why Brett Easton Ellis chose her to be a near-victim of Patrick Bateman.
This novel may not be as affirming or ground-breaking as 'Bright Lights, Big City' but it is a welcome return to form after the sometimes labored Ransom.
